Biotechnology studies are being driven by the demands of high tech industry, which uses different organisms or parts of organisms in cutting edge research and development. The biotechnology industry is dynamic and multi-disciplinary, applying advanced knowledge gained through scientific and technological breakthroughs in biotechnology and chemistry.
The biotechnology industry need engineers trained in different areas of science, engineering and research and development processes. The knowledge acquired by Ort Braude students in all these study fields is applied both in pilot facilities and in diverse industrial plants.
The goal of the Biotechnology Department is to train an increasing number of engineers who will have a broad background that will enable them to integrate in research and development in industry and academia in Israel and abroad—today and in the future.
The B.Sc. in Biotechnology Engineering study program offered by Ort Braude includes basic sciences such as mathematics, physics, statistic and chemistry; areas of biotechnology such as cell biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, microbiology, genetic engineering, and immunology; engineering and biotechnology areas such as chemical engineering, fermentation processes, separation processes and diagnostics.
In the framework of the B.Sc. in Biotechnology Engineering program students choose one of five specialization areas: cellular-molecular biotechnology, environmental biotechnology engineering, food and biotechnical engineering, biotechnical pharmaceuticals and bio-materials.
The program emphasizes practical training in the biotechnology industry in Israel and abroad. This stress on application is evident in the very large total number of hours students spend in the course of their studies in a wide range of sophisticated laboratories outfitted with the latest equipment, in learning the industrial applications of the theory being taught, and in their internships in industry or research institutes throughout the country or overseas.
The Biotechnology Department maintains close contact with the biotechnology industry in Israel and continually updates the course lists and content as well as its labs to keep up with the latest innovations and meet the new demands of the field. The teaching faculty specializes in a wide range of fields and has broad experience in academia and industry.
Graduates of the Biotechnology Department are sought after by research and development institutes, pharmaceutical, diagnostic and food companies and businesses in the agricultural sector and environmental protection. Approximately a third of our graduates go on to graduate studies in universities in Israel and abroad.
