Pädagogische Hochschule Kärnten / Viktor Frankl Hochschule (PHK)

The PHK (www.ph-kaernten.ac.at) is a public educational university institution, a place for academic training (primary and secondary schools and for schools for children with special needs), advanced training, in-service-training and vocational training for all teachers of all grades and all different school-types in Carinthia, the most southern province of Austria. The PHK focuses on acquiring theoretical knowledge based on the newest research in the field as well as on a good practical education teaching competencies in education and teaching. Since 2007 students have studied according to the new created modulized Bologna-conform system.

The main focus of the studies is on school-practice which students have to attend from the very beginning. Students are regularly confronted with the ideas of progressive/alternative educationalists like Dewey, Freinet, Montessori, Pankhurst, Petersen and Steiner. Future teachers over generations of pupils and models for the youth receive in different lectures/seminars education in the field of Citizenship Education to be aware of their responsibilities of becoming an active and critical citizen which all societies need. The UCTE is based on the ideas of Viktor Frankl. The language of Austria is German. In Carinthia there is also a minority speaking the Slovene language as their mother tongue. Therefore, the UCTE offers academic training in Slovene. Because of the closeness to Italy academic training is offered also in Italian language.

Because of the continuous increase in the number of incoming students, modules for incoming students taught in English have been created. The International Meeting organized once a year by the Office for International Affairs with its duration of one week can be named as THE international hub. The Office for International Affairs brings into the Tempus-IRIS-Project knowledge in building up an International Office and wide contacts within the “Klagenfurt-Network”, knowledge in education and teaching concerning diversity, reduction of prejudice, differentiation and individualization, intercultural learning and internationalization. All of this will be useful for the IRO training within the Work Package 4 and the IRO pilot activities (WP5). More than 60 people coming from 22 nations visited the International Meeting 2013. Within the new programme era ERASMUS+ the PHK has ACTIVE agreements with more than 100 universities or university colleges in Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
